Kensington Diabetes Clinic

The Kensington Area had the benefit of a free diabetes clinic this past week, the week of July 3rd, one of many clinics and programs run by Kensington Pharmacy at 309 Church Avenue. Previously they have had blood pressure screenings, and a tobacco use cessation event. The latest healthcare initiative centered on diabetes testing and health information.

The event was lead by Nurse Eddie Korycha with assistance from Shoshana Safir and Pharmacist Ruben Safir. Free Glucose testing and meters where available complements of Valerie Reyes of the Bayer Corporation. All together over 40 patients had their sugar levels tested and the Pharmacy gave away 18 Contour Meters to people with diabetes. Numerous questions were answered and material on Diabetes, Diet and blood sugar levels were all answered.

In addition to taking their blood sugar, Eddie was able to make routine medical interpretation of the numbers, check patients blood pressure and to refer patients as needed to medical doctors when needed. Information on diet control was available.

According to Nurse Korycha:

Diabetes is one of the leading, if not the leading, health issue in America today. Blood Pressure, Cholesterol and High Blood Pressure work together to cause a lot of pain and suffering, much of it completely avoidable. We wanted to give our neighbors, here at Kensington Pharmacy, a chance to see how they are doing with their diabetes in a relaxed enviroment, to help train them in the use of these new meters, and to help them live healthier, longer lives. I'm very proud to work with the pharmacy staff here at Kensington Pharmacy to go the extra step in reaching patients health goals and to bring understanding about the risks of diabetes in our community.
